## Graduate Student Advising

With so many collaborators at SEAS, it has been great to be part of multiple graduate students’ PhD committees. I’ve been part of the PhD qualifying exam committee and PhD dissertation committee for students advised by David Brooks, Gu-Yeon Wei, Vijay Janapa Reddi, H. T. Kung, Robert Wood, Marko Lončar, and Donhee Ham. To the Harvard grad students reading this: feel free to invite me to be part of your committee, or let me know any time you’d like to talk about your research and potential collaborations!

## Undergraduate Student Advising

Getting involved in research as an undergraduate is an all-around win for everyone involved. Of course, undergrads can get a taste of what it feels like to do research, i.e., trying to figure out questions and problems that no one has figured out before. This is quite different vs. working through homework for classes, and requires development of a different set of skills. Research experience especially valuable for undergraduates interested in the possibility of pursuing graduate school. Undergraduate researchers are also highly valuable for our research group, since they (you) help to advance our research mission, and gives our PhD students a chance to gain experience as mentors in advising research projects.

As such, we support undergraduates in our research group through a variety of programs that Harvard has to offer. We have supported students through a wide variety of mechanisms.

 **ES 100 Senior Project Advising**

I am proud that my ES 100 advisees have received high recognition. In particular, Yasmine Omri won the Dean’s award in 2023-2024, and Anna Ramos, Egemen Bostan, and Aaron Chin all received honorable mentions for Dean’s awards, in 2023-2024 (Anna), and 2022-2023 (Egemen and Aaron). I’ve attached pictures of the awards ceremonies below, with Dean David Parkes (2024) and Dean Frank Doyle (2023).

My advisees Aaron Chin and Egemen Bostan are 3rd and 4th from the left.*To the undergraduates: let me know *early* if you would like to do your ES 100 project with me! So far at Harvard, I have been wide open to doing projects with everyone who has asked. HOWEVER, this led me to advising a record-breaking *six* ES 100 projects in the the fall 2024 semester! Moving forward, I’d like to target 1-2 ES 100 projects per year. If you’re interested to do your ES 100 project together (I likely know who you are, based on independent research and summer research we have done together), please submit a 2 page ES 100 project proposal to me at least 1 month before the ES 100 project deadline. There is no specific format – just send me the proposal that you were going to submit to the ES 100 staff anyway. That way, in case there are more projects than I have time to advise, that gives you time to find an alternative adviser if need be. Thank you!
